kubus -

KUBUS is a prototype which I created for my final project in my Bachelor’s studies. It’s a minimalist game which relies entirely on clear visual communication to teach players its mechanics, no matter how much experience they have with gaming.

My intention was to make gaming accessible to people without experience since many games these days rely on and expect an inherent game literacy from their players. By deciding against the use of verbal language to teach the mechanics, KUBUS transcends language barriers.

The Design process

At the very beginning of the design process were two realisations:

1: My mother has not been able to play anything i have made until now because she is not fluent in english and feels intimidated by pc games.

2: i am terrible at programming.

out of these realisations and limitations arose my desire to make a game for non-gamers. one that could be understood by as many people as possible.

I struggled sticking to the simplicity at times. My hopes and dreams were much bigger than the time frame i had available and the programming skills at my disposal.

it started with a cube, as it often does. Throughout the prototyping process i limited myself to post-its. if the level concept was not able to fit on a small post it, it was too complicated.

In the end i had ten levels that all expanded on each other to teach all the necessary mechanics of the game. My engine of choice was unity.

During the bachelor expo where I was able to showcase my work, many inexperienced people came to visit my booth. Many of them were hesitant to try, but ended up giving it a shot. all of them (my mother included) felt that the game was right up their alley and not too intimidating at all!

on the other hand, all of the experienced gamers did not feel underwhelmed and saw a decent challenge in the game!
